Kanye West Turned Defiance Into Victory In 2010

So, this Kanye West fella, you might have heard of him. He basically Swift-boated his career at the 2009 VMAs, went into a self-imposed exile and then triumphantly returned nearly a year later with what many have called the best album of 2010. Huh?
In just over 12 months, West baffled critics by going from zero to hero, while still lashing out at the media and, with stunts like his #kanyeshrug hashtag, essentially proving he's the same guy he always was.
"I think the thing with Kanye, he really just stuck to the same script, which is basically, Iove me or hate me but the music is gonna be so great you have to deal with me," Complex editor-in-chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. "And that's been the story of his career since the beginning. I think this year, he happened to be loved or hated in such extremes at the end of 2009, going on a self-imposed exile in Hawaii, he really created a currency in the intrigue with what he was doing."
What he was doing was assembling a barrage of hip-hop's best producers — including Q-Tip, the RZA, Pete Rock and more — and a diverse range of collaborators to help put together his artistic denouement: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The collection was bombastic musically and browbeating lyrically.
The first shot, "Power," was a sonic middle finger to his detractors. 'Ye looked at his life and career and took stock of his place in the pop-culture ranks. It was a manifesto, of sorts, in which West declared that he was aware of his flaws and mistakes but everyone else can take them or leave them.
"He really figured that great music will change things," RapRadar and RESPECT. magazine's Elliot Wilson explained.
It wasn't just the music, though, that helped Kanye come back into people's good graces once again. He took to Twitter to voice this thoughts, sometimes in amusing non sequiturs, sometimes in revealing bunches of dispatches came in bunches, like when he addressed, once and for all, the Taylor Swift incident.
In words that he couldn't seem to put to melody or properly convey to a talk-show host, West simply took responsibility, apologized and moved on to the next track. And then he proceeded to change the subject with his string of G.O.O.D. Friday releases online.
"He did select press but he made a lot of noise online," New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. "I think he understood quickly how to make the best use of that medium."
But what the critics and everyone who catches themselves constantly humming songs from Fantasy agree on is that "he really brought it all back to the music," as Callahan-Bever put it. "At the end of the day no Taylor Swift incident or 'Today' show appearance can take away from [that]."

ATLANTA — As the debate among teen girls rages on about whether Justin Bieber is dating his tourmate, Disney princess Selena Gomez, the megastar teen is confident about one thing: Gomez's awesomeness.
MTV News caught up with the 16-year-old sensation as he got the word out about his holiday toy-collecting campaign, "Stuff Bieber's Bus," in Atlanta on Thursday (December 23), and while he didn't suggest that the two were more than friends, he did gush a little bit about the "Wizards of Waverly Place" actress.
"She's really cool," Bieber said. "She's an amazing person."
The "Baby" singer also commented about the nonstop fan frenzy and media mania that accompany any rumors about who the Biebs is or is not dating, and said that despite his outsize fame, he plans to keep his private life private.
"I think that people are always gonna be interested in my personal life ... but I gotta keep some things to myself," he said of the constant buzz surrounding his relationship with Gomez. "I'm just having fun being a teenager."
Speculation that the fresh-faced duo are more than friends has ramped up ever since the two were spotted hanging out and getting pancakes arm-in-arm. However, Gomez has batted away rumors that she and the "Somebody to Love" crooner are anything more than buddies who occasionally enjoy getting a bite to eat.
"It was pancakes. Who doesn't like pancakes?" Gomez told MTV News earlier this month.
Gomez has also talked about her "brotherly" relationship with Bieber, saying that she tries to keep an eye out for him as he continues to skyrocket toward megastardom.
"I love Justin. When he first started to come over from Canada, his manager contacted me and he just said that he would like to meet me and he was just such a good kid," she told MTV News in February. "And I feel like a big sister now, 'cause I want to protect him. So I'm always very cautious with him, but he is so talented and he's so sweet, so that just started us wanting to work together. Now he's just become one of my good friends."

Halle Berry Opens Up About Domestic Abuse
Life hasn't always been a glamorous walk down the red carpet for accomplished actress Halle Berry. The 44-year-old big-screen beauty recently told CNN a secret that she'd kept for years: as a little girl, she saw her own mother being abused.
"Honestly, I think I've spent my adult life dealing with the sense of low self-esteem that that sort of implanted in me," says Berry, the first African-American woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress.
"Before I'm Halle Berry, I'm little Halle, who was a little girl growing in this environment that damaged me in some ways. And I've spent my adult life trying to really heal from that."
To honor her mother, Berry has been working with the Jenesse Center, a Los Angeles women's shelter that helps families torn apart by domestic violence. "I have a spot in my soul that understands the devastation that this causes a family and how hard it is to rebuild your self-esteem when you've suffered," says Berry.
The actress has been working with the charity to renovate run-down apartments, where women who have fled abusive relationships can begin a new life. She also likes to spend time in the shelter, where she can play with the children of abused mothers and reassure them that everything will be fine. The young kids, of course, have no idea she's a Hollywood star.
"I'm just regular old crackers to them," she laughs. "And I love being regular old crackers, I have to say." Watch the interview below.
Berry took some time off from the movies after giving birth to her daughter Nahla in March 2008. She's coming back to Hollywood in full force in 2011, starting with her Golden Globe-nominated performance as a stripper with multiple-personality disorder in February's Frankie and Alice.

Survivor: Nicaragua?s Jane: ?Screw you! Y?all are not eating and can go hungry? No one can say 56-year-old Jane Bright, of Jackson Springs, N.C., did not play her hardest when it comes to the game of Survivor. Jane survived 36 days in some of the harshest elements in Survivor history and never once did we hear her complain. In fact, the only thing she is complaining about now is the faith she placed in fellow country boy Chase, whom she trusted implicitly, only to be blindsided on last night?s episode when she was voted out.After bonding with Chase early in the game, Jane believed it would be smooth sailing to the finale at Chase?s side. But when Fabio (Jud), who had just won immunity at a challenge, suggested Jane be voted out, no matter how uncomfortable with the decision, Chase went along with his tribe mates.
Even though Chase did not lie when Jane confronted him about the choice to vote her out, she still harbors a grudge. ?I am still mad at Chase,? Jane tells In Touch. ?My only regret is putting as much faith in him as I did. I believed him being a N.C. boy that he?d be true to his word, as most Southern men are. He is not. If he is like that in real life then heaven help him as he has a hard road ahead.?
Jane may have been the 13th person voted out and the seventh member of the jury, but viewers are thanking her for going out with a bang. In one of the season?s most shocking moves, fiery Jane extinguished the campfire that she?d made her life?s mission to tend while in the elements. ?By God, I started it, I?ll put it out,? she exploded as she unleashed a bucket of water on its flames. ?I took Chase aside and said, ?By gosh if y?all are voting me out tonight, I am leaving with a bang and if you try to stop me you?ll regret it,? admits Jane, who does not regret her decision and reveals the others did not escape her wrath either. ?I was like screw you! Y?all are not eating and can go hungry.?

When Rex signed a contract that pays $3 million a year, he did so with the acknowledgment that he was accepting more than just owner Woody Johnson's money and the task of leading the Jets to their first Super Bowl since 1969.
He was also trading in any semblance of a private life. Ryan coaches in new York, the sports equivalent of Beverly Hills when it comes to tabloid coverage.
He's the face of a franchise. He had to have known this embarrassing video would surface. It was his responsibility to do what he could to remove it.
Not because I care one iota about what Rex Ryan's sex life. But because a coach's job is to motivate, not distract. When Darrelle Revis is answering questions about the pinky toe tickle instead of the zone blitz, something is very wrong.

The mere existence of a Rex Ryan foot fetish video is bizarre, unusual, and enough to cause a tabloid frenzy. At its core, however, it's personal and harmless.
Rex's judgment was awful here. Anything resembling sexual dalliances with Michelle Ryan, a.k.a. "ihaveprettyfeet," should have been kept private - by him.
It's a distraction the Jets don't need as they attempt the difficult feet feat of making and advancing in the AFC playoffs. He should tread (sorry) more carefully.
At the same time, the man did nothing wrong.
So Rex Ryan has a thing for his own wife's feet. Since when does being a sexual freak make you a criminal, a detriment to society or even bad at your job?
In Brett Favre's case, dude allegedly sent pics of his mediocre wang to Jenn Sterger and requested a video of her masturbating. That's harassment. This?

Usher's 'OMG' Gets Celeb Endorsement As Song Of The Year

2010 had some great jams, and all week, MTV News has been counting down some of its best. Everything from Lady Gaga's "Telephone" and Rick Ross' "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)" to two of Kanye's West's killer My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy tracks, "Power" and "Runaway," made the top 10. But it was Usher's bombastic party jam "OMG" that rose to the top and came in at #1.
So what made that song such a party anthem? "Oh my God! That's exactly what I would say! Oh my God!" Pauly D joked about 2010's top party jam. "Dope, dope track. I love playing it. The crowd goes crazy when I play it. Usher's the man!"
Travie McCoy added: "It's a great song. It's undeniable, you know what I mean?"
"Dancing With the Stars" pro Lacey Schwimmer admitted that "OMG" was the track that got dancers, both professional and amateur, on the dance floor. "You guys got a great dance anthem," she said. "So be prepared for people who do not know how to dance just going to town!"
Producer Alex Da Kid gave props to will.i.am for the song's epic beat. "I love 'OMG.' I think it's definitely something different for Usher," he said. "And it still has all the dance performance elements Usher's known for, but it's something slightly different and done in a will.i.am kind of way, and it's different and that's why it connected to so many different people. It's a great song."
Celebrities also weighed in on their favorite jams of 2010, choosing everything from Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" and Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" to B.o.B and Hayley Williams' "Airplanes."

Happy Birthday, Christina Aguilera!
Back in the news for reasons both personal and professional, Christina Aguilera turns 30 years old today.
The singer filed for divorce from Jordan Bratman in October and has already rebounded with a production assistant named Matt Rutler. Friends worry about whether or not he's the right man for her.

Giuliana and Bill: The Oprah rumors are ?crazy!?
Shocked by reports that she and husband Bill are ready to take over Oprah's role as the talk-show ruler of Chicago, Giuliana Rancic is speaking out to In Touch. ?There is only one Oprah, and we would be crazy to think we could fill her shoes,? the E! correspondent says about the talk-show queen, whose long-running show will come to an end next September. ?We don't have any plans in the immediate future to do a talk show.? With her busy career as an entertainment reporter, along with her and hubby Bill?s Style Network reality series and their new gig as the NIVEA New Year?s Eve kiss couple in New York?s Times Square, the pair couldn?t possibly squeeze in hosting a daily talk show. ?We love working together," she adds, ?but we just don?t have the time!?

Michael Jackson Fans Celebrate Michael's Release With DJ Cassidy
'It was always my dream to DJ for Michael Jackson,' Cassidy says at album-release party Monday night.

NEW YORK — Many a Michael Jackson fan lined up outside of the Roseland Ballroom on Monday night to celebrate the release of the King of Pop's posthumous Michael album. Dozens of dancers and fans filled the ballroom's floor, decked out in costumes inspired by MJ's iconic looks from throughout his esteem career. One of those fans also happened to be the evening's master of ceremonies, DJ Cassidy.
"I'm here to make the fans dance," he told MTV News. "I think that's why Michael essentially made the music. He wanted to make people dance. He wanted to make people feel the emotion he felt, and I'm here to do just that. I'm here to help the fans in the celebration of the king."
Dressed in a leather suit with a pink shirt and socks, a red bowtie and shell-top Adidas, Cassidy said that he's been a fan of Jackson for as long as he can remember. The late singer has been his inspiration in anything artistic in his life, from music to fashion.
"So much of my fashion comes from Michael," Cassidy explained. "So much of how I play music comes from how he formed his songs, how he created his sound that really inspired the way that I DJ. And really, it inspired me to want to be a DJ, to want to make people dance.
"So, when I became a DJ at the age of 10, it was always my dream to DJ for Michael Jackson," he added. "Tonight's just a small way for me to really celebrate his music."
The party's guests also included producers Teddy Riley, Eddie Cascio and Neff U, who each had a hand in producing Michael's tracks. But before he began to spin for the night, Cassidy was thinking back to the classics, particularly his favorite party song, 1979's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."
"You can be anywhere in the world, any city, any small town, any type of crowd, black, white, old, young, poor, rich, at any type of venue," he said. "They could be wanting to hear house music, hip-hop music, anything in between, but 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' will turn that party out."
