Michael Jackson Doctor Pleads Not Guilty To Involuntary Manslaughter

Conrad Murray's trial slated to start March 28.

Michael Jackson's former personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray entered a plea of not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of the pop star at his arraignment on Tuesday morning (January 25).

According to the Los Angeles Times, when asked by judge Michael Pastor how he pleaded to the charge, Murray said, "Your honor, I am an innocent man." When Pastor interrupted and asked Murray what his plea was, the cardiologist said, "Therefore, I plead not guilty."

The brief hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court ended with Pastor setting a March 28 date for the start of a trial in the case. Murray faces a maximum of four years in prison if convicted, and the Times noted that he surprised the judge by invoking his right to a speedy trial, which meant the case would have to begin by late March. Pastor noted the rarity of a defendant asking to have a speedy trial, then set jury selection for the week of March 28 and said he was inclined to allow television coverage of the trial that the defense expects will last two months.

Lawyers for Murray have maintained his innocence all along, saying he did not do anything that "should have" caused the 50-year-old pop icon's death. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office determined that Jackson died of an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol mixed with a cocktail of other sedatives.

Murray has admitted to administering propofol to Jackson in the hours before the singer's death, but the defense appears to be gearing up to claim that it was Jackson who administered the final, fatal dose of the drug after he woke in a panic from a fitful night of sleep.

During a preliminary hearing earlier this month to determine if there was enough evidence to hold Murray over for trial, the physician's attorneys said that there was evidence Jackson injected or drank a fatal amount of the drug when the doctor was not looking.

January Jones' Baby Bump Lunch Date

Fresh off of her big baby news, January Jones showed off her still-small baby bump while out in Hollywood, CA on Friday (April 29).

The pregnant "Mad Men" actress dropped off her ride to valet personnel as she met up with actress Jennifer Carpenter for a relaxing lunch at the Sunset Tower Hotel.

As previously reported by GossipCenter, Miss Jones' rep told People magazine on the baby-on-the-way on Thursday night, "January Jones is happy to announce that she is expecting her first child this fall."

Now speculation as to the father has become the subject of interest, as January split from boyfriend Jason Sudeikis early this year.

Lady Gaga Says Fame Was Her 'Destiny' In New HBO Promo

'There was never a question in my mind that I was gonna make it,' singer says.
By Jocelyn Vena

In a new promo for her May 7 HBO special, Lady Gaga recalls her rise to fame. Sitting in a car, her pals by her side, the Mother Monster explains that she always knew she was going to make it and that she woke up one day "and the delusion was real."

"There was never a question in my mind that I was gonna make it and that this is my destiny and that we were all gonna make it as the kids of this city, as the New York generation," she says, driving through the streets of New York to Madison Square Garden where she taped the concert portion of the special.

"My faith in my creativity and my artistry has nothing to do with making it," she continued. "We kind of had already made it when we were playing for nothing downtown. ... We still felt like we were superstars."

She goes on to credit God for her success, as shots of her in the car are edited with ones of her in a deli getting coffee, walking down the street in a skimpy leotard and leather jacket, and greeting fans from her SUV. Later on, in the middle of a prayer, she says, "They used to always tell me, 'You will never be a star because you're too ethnic, you're too Italian, you're too out there.' It doesn't matter who you are, or where you come from or how much money you've got in your pocket. You have your own destiny and your own life ahead of you."

This is the latest tease for the special. On Monday, in a promo, Gaga cried about her lingering feelings of inadequacy. "I start to think about all the people that have tried to stop me, and I get this super-intense fury. ... I just sometimes feel like a loser still," she says. "It's crazy 'cause we're at the Garden, but I still sometimes feel like a loser kid in high school. And I just got to pick myself up and I have to tell myself I'm a superstar every morning so that I can get through this day and be for my fans what they need for me to be. But sometimes I still feel like people are trying to destroy me."

Previous teases have shown Gaga hitting the streets of New York, dressed in a studded leather jacket and high platform ankle boots, as "Born This Way" plays in the background. That same promo showed the madness at MSG leading up to her show, footage of which is also in the clip. In the second, shorter preview, shots of her performance are revealed as her new single, "Judas," plays.

Justin Bieber, Amy Poehler Breakout Stars At Time 100 Gala

'Parks and Recreation' co-star Aziz Ansari calls Poehler 'tremendously talented and really a leader in her field.'

Although names like Bruno Mars and Oprah Winfrey made the final cut on this year's Time 100 list of the world's most-influential people, among the celebs MTV News spoke to at the ritzy black-tie gala in New York on Tuesday night, all the talk was about Justin Bieber and "Parks and Recreation" funny lady Amy Poehler.

La La Vazquez, with hubby Carmelo Anthony, by her side, said, "Justin Bieber actually loves 'Melo. They're still waiting to have a one-on-one basketball competition so maybe we can make that happen this summer." She continued, "I think it's an honor to be included in such an elite group and be invited to come celebrate. When I heard we got invited, I was like, 'Oh yes, we are going to this event tonight.' "

The Roots' drummer, Questlove, said he totally understands why the Biebs made the list. "I'm excited to see everybody tonight," he said. "I'm very humble to be here. It's too many to mention. I drummed with Bieber before. I think that there might have been a question to why he was included, but it's obvious this is a person that went from YouTube sensation to viral sensation to international superstar — that's gonna be the next level of celebrity."

Leave it to Poehler's "Parks and Rec" co-star Aziz Ansari to write in his own candidate. Asked whether he prefers Bieber or South Korean pop star turned actor Rain, who also made the list, Ansari joked, "I don't know who either of those people are." Adding, "The most influential person to me is probably Waka Flocka Flame. He's on the list, right? I'm pretty sure he was on there."

All jokes aside, Ansari had only love for Poehler. calling her a "very inspirational person; tremendously talented and really a leader in her field."

Poehler's former "Saturday Night Live" co-star Seth Meyers also had tons of love for her. "For me personally, Amy Poehler's the most influential on the list," he said. "I certainly wouldn't be invited to this without Amy Poehler, so that's a big step. Mostly just like providing coattails for me to ride on for years," he joked. "That's pretty key; that influenced me a lot."

About Bieber, Meyers later added: "I quote him a lot. I say 'Baby, baby, baby' a lot more than I used to. I work in a maternity ward in my off-time."

By James Montgomery

Lollapalooza turns 20 in 2011, and when the granddaddy of all American summer festivals decides to throw a birthday party, the biggest acts on the planet are invited to help celebrate.

Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse, My Morning Jacket and deadmau5 top the Lolla 2011 lineup, which was revealed early Tuesday morning (April 26). Joining them is an appropriately eclectic mix of talent, including A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and Nas, the Cars and Ween.

The announcement confirmed a Chicago Tribune report that surfaced in early February and cited "reliable industry sources" as saying Em, the Foos and Muse would headline this year's edition of the fest.

Speaking of this year, Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Big Audio Dynamite, Deftones, Explosions in the Sky, Crystal Castles, Lykke Li, Foster the People, Two Door Cinema Club, Best Coast and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals are also on the bill. Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell will once again curate a dance and electronic music tent, which will feature performances from Girl Talk, Kid Cudi, Skrillex, Afrojack and more.

All in all, Lollapalooza 2011 features more than 130 bands. As in previous years, the fest will once again take place in Chicago's Grant Park, on August 5-7.

Early-bird tickets to the three-day event went on sale in late March and have since sold out. Regular-priced three-day passes are currently on sale through Lollapalooza.com and cost $215. VIP passes and travel packages are also available, and single-day passes are set to go on sale June 7.

For the full Lollapalooza 2011 lineup, check out the festival's website.

What do you think of this year's lineup? Let us know in the comments!

Lady Gaga Debuts 'Glee' Clip From 'Born This Way' Episode

Singer took to Facebook to share 50-second teaser that shows Mr. Schuester giving New Directions Gaga assignment.
By James Dinh

"Glee" is ready to go Gaga all over again. But this time, the New Directions gang will not only pay tribute to the pop star, they'll also embrace themselves in an episode devoted to self-acceptance.

Lady Gaga took to her Facebook on Friday (April 22) and premiered a clip from the highly anticipated episode, which airs Tuesday. In the preview, Mr. Schuester tells the club they'll be performing songs of self-love, including a group number of the singer's hit "Born This Way."

Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) kicks off the 50-second teaser by asking Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) why Ms. Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) is attending their glee club meeting. Schuester tells the students that the guidance counselor will be helping out with the weekly assignment.

"Now, this is the only club at school that is represented by just about every race, religion, sexual orientation and clique, but many of are you are still having a hard time with acceptance," he says.

Despite rebuttals from the students, the club director explains that while they may embrace one another, they still don't accept themselves — for all of their good and bad qualities. Mr. Schuester then reveals the two-part assignment: singing tunes of self-acceptance that highlight their best and worst aspects, as well as performing "Born This Way."

"We're going to do a group number by the queen of self-love, Gaga. We're going to perform her anthem to acceptance, 'Born This Way,' " he tells the students, who break into cheers and applause.

Back in January, "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy opened up about why he chose to feature the hit song in the episode, which has been super-sized to 90 minutes. "I love that that song is [an] anthem," Murphy told Entertainment Weekly. "This show is by nature optimistic, and I think a character like Karofsky could turn to booze or pills or alcohol and kill themselves or do something dark. But I also love Max [Adler, the actor] and I love that character and I sorta want that character to have a happy ending. So I don't really know what that's going to be, but I do know we're going to do a whole episode that's about that song."

Are you excited for the "Born This Way" episode of "Glee"? Weigh in below!

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.
By James Montgomery

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.

To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.

According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.

Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).

The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis.

It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October.

Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.

Deadmau5 Brings Dance Music To The 'Masses,' Wolfgang Gartner Says

'He has a major role in the younger generation to this music,' producer/DJ tells MTV News of his collaborator.
By Adam Stewart

It's no secret that 2010 was a pivotal year for electronic dance music here in the States. With deadmau5 and Swedish House Mafia becoming household names, the genre's momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Using a conduit of collaboration, artists such as deadmau5 (a.k.a. Joel Zimmerman) have paired up with various underground acts to further the rapid expansion of the genre.

Perhaps one of the most notable movers and shakers of the year is now-Grammy-Award-nominated producer and DJ Wolfgang Gartner, who recently sat down to chat with MTV News about deadmau5 and dance music's rise to the top.

"He has a major role in the younger generation to this music," Gartner says, "but there have been certain artists that have been instrumental in helping it cross over and reach the mainstream — which I think is a good thing. I think rap artists using dance beats is a great thing. I think it just brings more people towards this music that we all love."

Thanks to several key moments, such as deadmau5 taking the helm as house DJ (well, technically "House Artist") for the 2010 VMAs, dance music has been thrown into the forefront of America's youth, a key demographic for any genre.

"Everybody knows who he is now and he's kind of exposing the masses to dance music. These little five-, six- and seven-year-old kids latch on to this 'mau5head' logo — they get into the music and he's bringing this tiny young generation into this music that probably wouldn't be exposed to it."

Gartner certainly doesn't mind the exposure either. Unless you were living under a rock for the past six months, you probably heard one of this past summer's hottest anthems, "Animal Rights," a collaborative effort brought forth by deadmau5 and Gartner.

"It was interesting because I kind of had a preconceived notion about how he would be to work [with]," said Gartner. "I think our sounds are really similar, so I figured he would work in a similar way to me, but the way that he writes music is actually completely different to me. But he achieves kind of the same sound through a completely different process."

Recorded in deadmau5's favorite Los Angeles studio — that would be rocker Tommy Lee's House — "Animal Rights" is a thumping progressive house anthem that melds Wolfgang's unmistakable harmonics and funk riffs with the driving bass line and wobbly synths that make deadmau5 one of the unique forces in the dance music world.

"[Deadmau5] writes these rich complex chord progressions and he does it by drawing these little bars on a grid, which is just amazing that you can do that and get that result," Gartner goes on to say. "It just proves you don't have to be able to play keyboards to write amazing music."

The two sound pioneers never cease to stop pushing the limits on what they are able to produce. Using drastically difference production approaches, deadmau5 and Gartner had the ability to play off each other's strengths while recording the track.

"I'd say the biggest thing is that I play everything in on a keyboard, like even my drums," says Gartner. "I play everything in live and he draws it in with notes on a mouse, which blew me away because his music is very musical."

What do you think 2011 will hold for deadmau5 and Gartner? Let us know in the comments below!

Britney Spears Tour Invite 'Is Such An Honor,' Nervo Say

Aussie DJ duo tell MTV News they're ready to 'spread the Nervo love' on Femme Fatale tour.
By Jocelyn Vena

Nervo's Mim and Liv will be joining Britney Spears this summer for her highly anticipated Femme Fatale tour, alongside Nicki Minaj and Jessie and the Toy Boys.

When the Aussie twins spoke to MTV News on Tuesday, the same day the tour lineup was announced, they seemed genuinely surprised by the news, calling the slot "such an honor."

"We have worked with her team of people for songwriting camps and stuff like that, but we've never met Britney. It's been a dream to have one of our record productions on her album, but we didn't get there this time," Mim said.

All the acts on the tour are female, so Liv thinks "it's going to be ladies night every night. I imagine we'll be playing some of our club releases," she added of Nervo's set. "It'll be a DJ set and very electronic and house-based. We're really excited to be able to warm everyone up with some sexy house music."

The girls are also excited about the prospect of meeting Britney. "I wonder if I'll be starstruck? I just love her. I just love her records. She always releases great pop records. I really respect her," Mim said.

"You hear rumors that [the openers] never really get to meet [the main acts]," Liv said. "I hope we get to hang out. We've been told we're going to be on an RV for a lot of it. I love the whole experience of being on a tour bus. I love the road."

Since the tour seems to be all about girl power, the two sassy ladies explained what makes them such femme fatales. "I guess we have a no-fear attitude," Mim said. "We don't let our being girls stop us. Certainly DJing is a very male-dominated [field], and we haven't let us being girls stop us."

Bottom line: They're hoping through their house-music set they can "spread the Nervo love."

Are you excited to see Nervo on Britney Spears' tour? Let us know in the comments!

Zeta-Jones Opens Up About Bipolar Disorder

Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has opened up about her diagnosis of bipolar disorder at a mental-health clinic in recent months. The wife of Michael Douglas said she hopes to help raise awareness about the disease as well as help fellow sufferers seek treatment. Admitted to a mental-health clinic after deciding she needed help with depression, the actress said she never quite recovered from her husband’s cancer diagnosis. Now, she says she’s risking the public exposure in order to reach out to others. Brave woman! ?This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them. If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently, and there is no shame in seeking help,?? said the actress Zeta-Jones was diagnosed with a bipolar II, which is a less extreme version of the classic bipolar I disorder. Signs of the disease include emotional cycling between extreme happiness and depression. I personally had no idea that someone could develop the disease as a result of a traumatic incident! A friend of Catherine’s said she noticed the actress’s behavior start to change after Douglas’ diagnosis. [...]

Winklevoss Twins File New Appeal Against Mark Zuckerberg, Allege IMs Prove Facebook Fraud

Despite losing their appeal, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss are STILL going after Mark Zuckerberg, saying he and Facebook ruthlessly defrauded them.

The Winkelevoss twins are not giving up on their claims against Zuckerberg and the social networking site, which they claim was there idea originally.

They point to two damning IMs as proof that Zuck f*%ked them.

Winklevii and Zuck

Zuckerberg and Facebook settled with the genetic freaks for $65 million, but they've been trying to undo the deal, on grounds of fraud, to obtain more.

The Winklevii want a federal appellate court to reexamine their settlement with Facebook, acknowledge that the IMs are proof of fraud and nullify it.

Tyler and Cameron claim Facebook intentionally withheld messages sent by Mark saying, "Yeah, I'm going to f**k them ... probably in the [ear]."

In another IM, Zuckerberg allegedly told a friend:

"But [the twins] made a mistake haha. They asked me to make it for them. So I'm like delaying it so it won't be ready until after the facebook comes out."

Maybe The Social Network was more accurate than we thought ...

9/11 Conspiracy Theorists: Angry at Charlie Sheen

He's angered CBS employees, sitcom fans and women's rights group.

But Charlie Sheen is now facing the wrath of an unexpected enemy: The 9/11 Truth Movement.

A representative of that group - which alleges the World Trade Center attacks were initiated by the The United States - says he and his fellow conspiracy theorists are peeved that the actor is using his tour to prattle on about drug use, Denise Richards and other items that aren't related to Sheen's former claims about the buildings' collapse appearing to be a "controlled demolition."

Charlie Sheen in Canada

Mark Dice says Sheen should be "asking hard questions about what happened on 9/11 and the resulting wars... not bragging about smoking crack and sleeping with hookers."

Dice has failed in his attempts to contact the star and adds that he and his group will protest Sheen's upcoming shows if the topic is not addressed.

So congratulations Mark Dice and The 9/11 Truth Movement. You've managed to make Charlie Sheen look sane.

'Scream 4' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Wes Craven and stars, including Hayden Panettiere, on what to expect.
By Eric Ditzian

Neve Campbell in "Scream 4"
Photo: Weinstein Co.

Eleven years has passed since the previous installment in the "Scream" franchise. The teens that the Weinstein Company is hoping to entice to see the new sequel were probably more keen back in 2000 on watching SpongeBob SquarePants chillax in an underwater pineapple than Ghostface bloodily terrorize Woodsboro.

Yet the challenge facing "Scream 4" is hardly unique in Hollywood. Nineteen years passed between "Indiana Jones" flicks, and "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" still raked in nearly $800 million worldwide in 2008. Will audiences still care about the ongoing tale of Sidney Prescott and a knife-wielding psycho? We have a feeling they will. MTV News certainly does, which is why we've been closely watching the production since word of the project first surfaced in 2008 and can now present our "Scream 4" cheat sheet: everything you need to know about the new horror flick.

Sharpening the Knife
News of the fourth film broke in July of '08, and shortly after, MTV News revealed that Wes Craven, who helmed the previous trilogy, was in talks to return to the director's chair. But guess what? Not just one new "Scream" was in the works, but an entire trilogy — again masterminded by Kevin Williamson. David Arquette and Courteney Cox were reportedly in talks to re-join the franchise, though early word suggested Neve Campbell had dropped out. Cox, it turned out, would eventually sign on.

"The fourth one is an ensemble," Williamson told us in November '09. "It'll take place right now, 10 years later, and it's going to take place in Woodsboro. We'll have our three main characters, and we'll be introducing several more."

Craven officially signed on to direct in March 2010 and production kicked off early that spring. Joining the familiar faces were Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, Adam Brody, Kristen Bell, Anna Paquin and others.

Returning to Woodsboro
Eleven years after "Scream 3," would the next installment have enough in store to both satisfy and surprise theatergoers? "For an audience that is so well-versed in 'Scream' [films] and in what happens and who becomes the killer, blah, blah, blah, it's trickier to throw them a curveball," Panettiere admitted. "I think they've done a really cool job with the script. We've had a blast on it."

The first footage for the film popped up in September, thanks to "Entertainment Tonight" — not that it revealed much of anything about the plot. But story details had already been emerging over the previous months. As Craven explained, the film would play off the idea of "sequelitis," referring not only to the many "Scream" films but the fictional "Stab" flicks within the "Scream" mythology.

"[Sidney] has been off by herself and living her own life, and she's even written a book that has gotten a lot of critical acclaim," he added. "She's kind of put her life back together in the course of these 10 years. But, certainly, there would be no 'Scream' without Ghostface, so she has to confront him again, but now as a woman who has really come out the darkness of her past."

The trailer debuted in October. Culkin's character stepped in to explain the new rules: the kill has to be more extreme (cue woman plummeting to her demise atop news truck), virgins aren't safe (cut to Ghostface chasing scantily clad virgin around bedroom), and the killer should be filming his handiwork (see Cox discovering camcorder prior to run-in with Ghostface). A second trailer arrived in January, giving us more screams and more near-kills. The question, of course, remains ...

Who's the Killer?
No one in the cast will cop to the murders just yet. "My character is not the killer, because she knows horror movies too well," Panettiere argued when we caught up with her recently. "She knows how they work, and she's too terrified in that scene in the preview."

"My character is not the killer because she's Sidney Prescott," Campbell added.

Said Aimee Teegarden, "Why am I not the killer? I'm not the killer because I have great hair in the movie. And if you have great hair, you don't die — bottom line."

Whoever the killer ends up being, we have not seen the last of Ghostface. "Scream 4" is only the first flick in the new planned trilogy. So where does the franchise go from here?

"It's a process that I think all of us go through, trying to stay fresh and not repeating our last acts," Craven told us. "What is next? What thoughts are in my mind that are original, thoughts that even surprise me, as opposed to looking up and going, 'Oh, I guess I can do one of those. I guess I can make a zombie movie!' We just need to keep it fresh and, in a sense, inspired. The thought that you can't even intellectually sit down necessarily and come up with something, but then a thought comes and hits you in the middle of the shower — that's your deepest subconscious creativity talking to you."

Check out everything we've got on "Scream 4."

The "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" trailer arrived early yesterday morning, and we still can't get it out of our heads more than a full day later. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that Fox simply refuses to end the relentless monkey business.
