'50/50': The Reviews Are In

Most critics think the comedy about cancer proves anything can be funny.
By Eric Ditzian

When Will Reiser first found out he had cancer, he and his comedy-writer buddies (including Seth Rogen and "Pineapple Express" scribe Evan Goldberg) would jokingly wonder if Reiser's disease would bring them all a Make-a-Wish opportunity to hang with Led Zeppelin.

That rock-and-roll dream never came true, but Reiser's battle with, and eventual remission from, cancer did gift them all with one thing: "50/50," a comedy (out now) that is drawing rave reviews from critics and is being discussed as a possible contender come awards season. Though not all reviewers have found it easy to find yuks in a deadly serious topic, far more point to the film as an example that nothing is out of bounds when it comes to art and comedy; handled deftly, anything can lead to laughter and learning.

The Story
"Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a nice guy with a great job at a Seattle NPR station, a promising relationship with up-and-coming artist Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard), a best-friend-since-high-school named Kyle (Seth Rogen) to hang with -- and, as he learns to his horror in a doctor's office, cancer. ... Also woven deftly into the mixture is Anna Kendrick as a young (very young) therapist assigned to work with Adam; [Anjelica] Huston as the kind of mother who explains 'I want you to know that I smothered him because I love him' to anyone who will listen. ... It's not a perfect movie, but it doesn't matter. '50/50' takes on a bold subject and makes us laugh and cry. I thought I didn't want to see a cancer comedy; I was wrong." -- Moira McDonald, The Seattle Times

The Laughs
"Scenes where the pals trash a piece of once-important memorabilia in a backyard rampage and the after-effects of pot-laden cookies scored at the chemotherapy clinic show loopily grinning Gordon-Levitt at his best. Kudos to [director Jonathan] Levine for not letting Rogen's very funny comedic bits overshadow the proceedings. The actor dials it down ever so slightly and isn't afraid to be the butt of jokes -- watch for Gordon-Levitt's spot-on Rogen impersonation. The suggestion a bald head and a cancer diagnosis could be the ultimate pickup leverage leads Adam and Kyle into funny territory. But the hilarity turns with the exploration of deeper relationships as Adam finds new friends among the genial stoners of all ages at the chemo clinic." -- Linda Barnard, Toronto Star

The Writing
"[Reiser] draws on his personal battle with a rare form of that disease. His success rate in the delicate balance between comedy and the profound devastation of such an illness is much greater than 50/50, but the film is not without its tonal lapses. ... Reiser has written his characters with an indelible sweetness and vulnerability, which allows the cast to deliver performances with some depth. So a situation such as Kyle insisting that Adam and he should cruise girls at a bar looking for sympathy lays -- Cruisin' with the Big C as it were -- comes off as quite funny as does Adam's first chemo session where he ingests weed-laced sweets created by a fellow patient's wife and floats out of the hospital afterwards." -- Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter

The Dissenters
"In the pantheon of tastelessness designed to make you laugh at diarrhea, menstruation, masturbation, yeast infections, fellatio and worse, you can now add a stupid horror called '50/50.' Artificial, irresponsible, filthy and forgettable, it knocks itself cross-eyed trying to make you roar with laughter at chemotherapy, with the nauseating Seth Rogen milking most of the yuks. But a stoner comedy about cancer? I don't think so." -- Rex Reed, The New York Observer

The Final Word
"The reason '50/50' works is it's not trying to force us into any particular emotion. It fits in the emerging category of sad-man comedies such as 'Up in the Air' and 'Crazy, Stupid Love,' telling its downbeat tale with tenderness, sincerity and warmth. '50/50' isn't a cancer buddy comedy or a male weepie but a message movie. The message is that you can tackle pretty much any subject matter and tell a story any way you want to onscreen as long as it's absorbing." -- Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune

Lady Gaga And Cher's 'The Greatest Thing' Is 'Timeless'

'It's an event,' co-writer/producer RedOne tells MTV News.

While we anxiously await the release of Lady Gaga and Cher's duet, "The Greatest Thing" — which, according to Cher's Twitter, is supposed to drop in roughly two days — we can while away the hours with a few insider details about the song from co-writer/producer RedOne.

When MTV News caught up with the mega-producer recently, we did our best to get an early listen of the track, but no dice. Instead, we asked him to tell us specifically what kind of song "The Greatest Thing" is and whether we'll want to dance to it or sing along — or both.

"I think it's timeless. The beautiful thing about this song is, it's very uplifting, very uplifting. It's emotional, but it has dance on it, and it has a dance vibe on it," he explained. "It's just a timeless song. You can play it with the guitar, the piano, with whatever instrument you want. You can sing it a cappella, you know what I mean, it's that kind of song.

"I'm very excited about that song," Red added. "And it's an event. Cher and Lady Gaga: How big can it get?"

RedOne said Cher and Gaga were ecstatic with the finished product, and he couldn't be happier to have helped connect the two stars.

"Everybody loved it," he said. "Gaga on it, Cher, two big icons. [They are] part of music history. So it happened. I'm very happy to be a part of this."

What are you expecting from "The Greatest Thing"? Let us know in the comments!

Chris Brown Set To Go 'Undercover' With J. Cole

'I think the ladies gonna like this one,' DJ Drama teases MTV News about collabo from his October album.
By Rob Markman

J. Cole is riding high this week after the release of his debut, Cole World: The Sideline Story. Aside from the inevitable euphoria that comes with dropping one's first album, relative newcomer Cole also got a chance to work with Jay-Z, Missy Elliott and Trey Songz on the project. But fans shouldn't expect the high-profile collaborations to stop there thanks to DJ Drama.

On October 11, the Atlanta DJ will drop his latest album, Third Power, on which he paired Cole with Chris Brown for a track titled "Undercover."

"We were searching for tracks for Chris," Drama explained to MTV News about how he and producer V12 the Hitman came up with the song. "We got something, Chris went in. I thought about it for a minute: Who hasn't he worked with, who hasn't he been on a record with?"

That meant excluding heavy hitters like Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Kanye West and Swizz Beatz, who are among CB's army of previous collaborators. Drama eventually thought to link Brown with Roc Nation's rookie rapper Cole, and although the pair appeared together on little-known British rapper Chipmunk's "Champion (Remix)," Drama's "Undercover" will mark the first time Cole and Breezy co-headline a song.

"J. Cole has definitely been doing his thing," Drama added. "That's another guy that I have a lot of respect for and am excited for what he's been accomplishing, so we made that allegiance right there; plus, you got some bars from Breezy."

Brown already has a dedicated female fanbase and Cole — thanks to songs like his R&B-tinged "Can't Get Enough" and a feature on Miguel's hit "All I Want Is You" — is becoming a heartthrob himself. Whatever the case, Drama is pretty sure the song will win women over. "I think the ladies gonna like this one," he said.

Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez's Arena Date: How Much Did It Cost?

A regular guy would have dropped serious coin to rent out the Staples Center for a romantic night out.
By Gil Kaufman

Membership has its privileges, and when the club you're in is the elite pop star society, there isn't much you can't get your hands on. That's why a teenager like Justin Bieber was able to swing the swankiest surprise date of all time with his squeeze Selena Gomez on Friday night when he treated her to dinner and a movie at the Staples Center.

Now, before you get any ideas. The 20,000-seat home of the Los Angeles Lakers (and countless major concerts) is not available to just any Joe Schmo. No, Bieber reportedly got the keys to the palace for free because he's sold the joint out three times and owner AEG Live figured they'd throw him a bone. Which got us thinking: What would it cost to treat your sweetie to a Bieber-esque night of steak and "Titanic"?

Check out photos of Justin and Selena.

As you might imagine, the powers-that-be at Staples weren't really willing to spill the beans, but we crunched some numbers on our own and here's what we were able to figure:

$475,000: That's how much it would cost you to buy a high-end VIP luxury suite for 14 at the Staples Center, which would get you about 2,500 tickets a year to Lakers, Clippers and Sparks basketball games; L.A. Kings hockey games; concerts; lectures; X Games; and wrestling matches. Given that the venue holds 20,000, we can only imagine a one-night rental would run you well into the six figures.

$200-plus: Bieber ordered steaks and pasta from the exclusive members-only Lexus Club at Staples, a 130-capacity high-end dining area where even the buffet will run you $57.

Priceless: The lucky couple reportedly watched "Titanic" on their date. Now, most men would try to save a few bucks and rent the regular DVD, but given JB's clear baller tendencies, is it safe to assume he called James Cameron and finagled an early copy of the 3-D anniversary Blu-ray edition that is due out in April?

$299 to $1,199: The price of renting an inflatable, 32- to 40-foot portable movie screen from FunFlicks.com for a special event. That is, assuming the Biebs did not make Gomez crane her neck and watch the whole movie on the Center's Jumbotron.

194: That's how many minutes "Titanic" would run if JB didn't have a remote that would allow him and Selena to skip some of the hours of extras.

2:30 a.m.: That's about how late into the morning the couple would have had to stay at Staples in order to watch all of "Titanic," assuming they started it as soon as they arrived at 11 p.m. and had it running during their meal.

$300,000: The amount Bieber pulls in nightly at each one of his concerts.

$53 million: That's how much Bieber banked in 2010. In other words, don't sweat it: He can afford this kind of date every night of the year if he wants to.

What do you think of Justin's date idea for Selena? Tell us in the comments!

Ryan Gosling's Taking Over Hollywood

ryandog1_wide.jpg
From co-starring with Hollywood heavy hitters like George Clooney to filming his newest movie, The Gangster Squad, with Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling looks poised to be the next big name in movies. In Touch caught up with Ryan to talk about his latest film, Drive.

?When I read this script and I was looking at this character?s behavior ? he was going around acting like a maniac ? I thought, ?This is somebody who has seen too many movies,'" he explained. "He basically started to become the hero of the movie of his life. I thought that could be implemented into this script, but I needed a director that could help me achieve that.?

Ryan, with the support of producer Marc Platt, was given the opportunity to produce and find the right director for the film. He chose Nicolas Winding Refn. ?I wanted this movie to be something that had personality and an identity, and that you wanted to be in the movie theater to see. I was watching his films and seeing that they were like the Grimm?s brothers fairy tales. They?re also very personal. I appreciate how personal his films are, and that they have a real identity.?

But it wasn?t easy getting Drive made. ?This movie wouldn?t have happened, if REO Speedwagon hadn?t come on the radio when I was driving Nicolas home from our first terrible meeting. No one was getting any action. So, we wanted to just go home. Suddenly, REO Speedwagon [?Can?t Fight This Feeling?] came on the radio, and he started crying, and then he started singing the song, at the top of his lungs. He said, ?This is it. This movie is about a guy who can?t feel anything, unless he?s driving around, listening to pop music.? The movie was conceived in my car. It had this dreamlike quality, while we were shooting it. It was a very unique movie-making experience.?

Drive is in theaters now. And watch out for Ryan?s next film, The Ides of March, starring George Clooney, opening October 7.

Britney Spears Responds To 'Criminal' Video Controversy

'The video is a fantasy story,' statement says after U.K. criticism that the clip glorifies violence.
By James Montgomery

When Britney Spears flew to London earlier this month to shoot her video for "Criminal," she probably didn't think the clip would generate the kind of controversy it has.

And yet, in the week since she wrapped filming, Spears has been taken to task by politicians in the U.K. for a scene in the video, in which the pop star packs a pistol as she flees a London-area building. They've claimed that the image of Brit gripping a gun glamorizes violence and, in the aftermath of the widespread riots that rattled the nation last month, the pop star should "apologize ... for the rudeness and damage that she's done to our community."

Late Monday (September 26), MTV News received a statement from Spears' camp about the "Criminal" controversy — and, from the sound of things, she's not going to be apologizing anytime soon.

"The video is a fantasy story featuring Britney's boyfriend, Jason Trawick, which literally plays out the lyrics of a song written three years before the riots ever happened," the statement read.

Criticisms of the "Criminal" video began last week, after images of Spears and Trawick making an escape from an apparent robbery (with Brit brandishing a replica revolver) began making the rounds. The scene in question was shot in the London borough of Hackney, which was hit hard by the August riots, and local politicians were upset by what they saw as an insensitive gesture by Spears.

"It is only a music video, but it's images like this, with pop stars glamorizing gangs, which means that some young people ... get drawn in," Hackney's Member of Parliament, Diane Abbott, told the ITV news program "London Tonight." "Britney should really know better."

Hackney's council members — who gave Spears' camp the OK to shoot at the nearby Stoke Newington Town Hall — also took issue with the fact that no one involved with the production of the "Criminal" video mentioned that a gun was to be used in the clip and, had they known, they would not have allowed filming in the recently restored building.

"In this case we did not agree that a replica gun could be used at Stoke Newington Town Hall and are disappointed," the council said in a statement to "London Tonight." "We will be raising this matter with the production company."

Red Cafe Feeling The Love With Valentine's Day Release Date

'I wanted to tag it with that big holiday and just give something that the people could give as a gift,' he tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Matt Elias

Red Café

It's been a long time coming, but on February 14, Red Café hopes to finally present to the world his labor of love.

It was 2005 when the Brooklyn MC first started buzzing with his street single "Bling Blaow," and two years later, he collaborated with DJ Envy from MTV2's "Sucker Free" to release their collaborative Co-Op street album. Now, Red looks forward to finally dropping his proper solo debut, Shakedown, on Bad Boy/ Konvict Muzik.

"February 14, Valentine's Day," Red told MTV News of his album release date, while on the video set for his current single "Fly Together" with Rick Ross and Ryan Leslie. "I wanted to tag it with that big holiday and just give something that the people could give as a gift — his or hers, it's all good."

Through the years, Café has had no shortage of high-powered street jams like "Da Hottest in Da Hood," "I'm Ill" with Fabolous and the Rick Ross-assisted "Faded," but his oft-delayed debut at times overshadowed his talent. Luckily, fans won't have to wait much longer, according to Red.

"We're in a good place. I'm excited about the album. I'm happy with what we have and where I'm at musically. I'm happy with the growth," he said. "We have a growing fanbase. I'm still learning a lot, but I know what my people want, and I think we have it on the album.

"I'm really, really excited. I got some big features on there, I got some big producers as well," Café said before revealing Fabolous as one of his collaborators. "I'm just ready to go. I can't wait for the tour, I can't wait for the release. I'm just ready for everything."

What are you expecting from Red's debut? Let us know in the comments!

Demi Lovato Hopes to Make a Difference

Demi Lovato has a new album out and, of course, she wants it to do well.

But the 18-year old tells The Associated Press that she has much loftier goals these days: she wants to be a role model to young girls everywhere. Referring to her struggles with eating, body images and bipolar disorder, Lovato says:

"To me, it's more rewarding for me to speak about these issues and know that I'm possibly making a difference in someone's life. I feel like I'm held more accountable to stay healthy now because now I'm a role model to young girls to not have eating issues and to not say, 'Hey, it's OK to starve yourself' or 'It's OK to throw up after your meals.' That's not OK."

Demi Lovato - Lightweight (Live)

Demi is still in therapy for her own problems and says recovery is a "daily battle."

"I have a very strong treatment team. I have people around me that at the sign of anything, they say something and they speak up and they are no longer afraid to say, 'Hey, maybe you shouldn't be doing this' because they're afraid of losing their job."

Lovato actually stopped mid-song during a recent concert and thanked fans for their support.

'Awkward.' Star Ashley Rickards Flees Cops, On 'When I Was 17'

MTV actress recalls hilariously mistaking police car's flashing lights for brake lights on Saturday's episode.
By Lauren Kearney

Ashley Rickards as Jenna in "Awkward."

Ashley Rickards, the star of MTV's "Awkward.," can probably sympathize with her character, Jenna, whose many FML moments include having her classmates mistake an accident for a failed suicide attempt. On Saturday's episode of "When I Was 17," she recalls a hilarious run-in with the law that sounds like it was ripped from the comedy series.

"I was driving around my neighborhood ... stop at the stop sign and there's a cop behind me and his brake lights went on," Ashley remembers in the episode airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT. "It was a stop sign — the brake lights are going to go on.

"So I keep going down the road; half a mile ... a mile. Then all of a sudden, the sirens go off," she says.

While most people would agree that the blaring of a police car siren is quite possibly one of the most terrifying sounds on the planet, the suddenly panicked Ashley was sure she hadn't done anything wrong.

"So I pull over and he says, 'Do you realize I've been trying to pull you over for the past mile?' I'm like, 'No I just heard the sirens now.' And he was like, 'I didn't have the sirens on. I was flashing my lights.' I felt like such an idiot," she laughs.

"She didn't understand that the red on the top lights were different than the brake lights," Lisa, Ashley's mom, explains.

But the "Awkward." star still swears to this day that there were no blue lights flashing, just "exclusively the red ones." Honest mistake, Ashley. Brake lights can totally be on the top of a car too, right? Or something?

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Wyclef Jean and Ashley Rickards — airs on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Britney Spears 'Can't Be Knocked Down'

Celebrity fans including former 'NSYNC singer JC Chasez, tourmate DJ Pauly D and more weigh in on why Brit is still on top.
By Jocelyn Vena

At the 2011 Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga's alter ego Jo Calderone presented Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award by telling the audience that Spears "taught us all how to be fearless." And that fearlessness was honored with a dance-heavy tribute to the pop star. Brit's ever-growing legacy is the reason why she was so deserving of the special award, her celebrity fans and members of her inner circle told MTV News.

"She never lets you down," her longtime choreographer Brian Friedman told MTV News on the VMA black carpet on Sunday night. "She's definitely not dull. There's always something crazy coming around the next turn. I think it's a mix between music, which is always incredible, the dance performance you see on the stage, the iconic videos, the fashion, and then the fact that she can't be knocked down."

We spotted Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and more hanging out backstage!

Those sentiments were mirrored by her pal and former 'NSYNC member JC Chasez, who noted that even at 30, "She's actually been around long enough [to have a tribute]. She has a body of work to pull from."

Spears' former tourmate, DJ Pauly D, also gushed about the singer, who won Best Pop Video for "Till The World Ends."

Find out how Beyoncé and Jay-Z Celebrated Their VMA Baby News!

"Oh, man! She deserves it out of anybody," the "Jersey Shore" star said. "She's been killing it forever now. She's got so many albums, and every time she brings out an album, she brings it."

After Gaga presented Spears with the award on Sunday, a group of young female dancers of various ages, dressed up in Britney-themed costumes from her hit music videos, took the stage to perform some of her most memorable moves.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Stick with MTV News for winners, fashion pics, video and behind-the-scenes stories about everything that went down. Visit VMA.MTV.com for the latest.

Ke$ha Is Channeling 'Sexiness' Of '70s Rock For New Album

Glitter-heavy pop star tells MTV News she's going for 'balls-out, irreverent rock and roll.'
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

Ke$ha
Photo: MTV News

Ke$ha's already got the face paint down pat, and, during recent live sets, she's even taken to guzzling blood out of a human heart, so it should come as no surprise that, on her upcoming album, the pop star is taking things back to the most theatrical era of rock: the prop-heavy, arena-spanning heyday of the 1970s.

Ke$h revealed her plans over the weekend in Los Angeles, on the red carpet of KIIS FM's annual Wango Tango concert, where she told MTV News that the follow-up to her breakout Animal album (and, we suppose, Cannibal too) would be heavy on hard riffs and light on pretty much everything else.

"The next album ... I've been working on writing on the road, but as far as a sound, I just know it's gonna be balls-out, irreverent rock and roll," she said. "I've been pretty much in this '70s rock and roll kick and I just want to capture some of the true essence of what rock and roll is, and that's just irreverence and sexiness and fun and not giving a f---, so we'll definitely put a bit of rock and roll in it."

So, does that mean that fans can expect the likes of Alice Cooper or Peter Frampton to show up on her new album? Perhaps. Because while Ke$ha's new album is still a ways off, she's already begun calling in favors, hoping to line up a killer collabo for the new disc.

"I'm trying, trust me," she laughed. "I really would love to connect with one of my idols, I mean, that's my dream. I'm working on it."

What do you think of Ke$ha going rock for her next album? Tell us in the comments!

Jay-Z Wasn't Always On Freeway's 'What We Do'

Hov was only supposed to contribute an ad-lib, but he and Beanie Sigel ended up dropping verses, Free recalls on 'RapFix Live.'

Freeway has quite a few gems in his catalog, one being the Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel-assisted single "What We Do" from his 2003 debut, Philadelphia Freeway. The trio trade vivid verses filled with sarcastic regret over a Just Blaze-produced soul beat.

While the track remains a fan favorite, Free admitted on Wednesday's "RapFix Live" that he originally planned for the song to be a solo affair. Freeway recalled recording the track at Roc-A-Fella's Bassline Studios in New York City. On any given night, the entire Roc roster would be milling about the studio, and the bearded MC often sought musical advice from his labelmates.

"It was always that family vibe that they said was around. So I can go like, "Cam, how this sound?" Or "Jay, how that sound?" " Free remembered.

While recording "What We Do," Philly Freezer asked Jay to record an ad-lib for the song. On the track, after Free spits the line "When the teeth stop showing, and the stomach start growling, then the heat start blowin'/ If you from the 'hood, I know you feel me," Jay jumps in and adds, "Keep goin'." But after hearing what Free had already laid down, the God MC decided to contribute an entire verse.

"So when I was recording "What We Do," I originally called Jay just to do the "keep goin'." So when he heard it, he sat down on the bench in Bassline and was just vibin' out," Free said before crossing his arms and nodding his head to mimic Jay's writing technique. "He sat there for 10 minutes, then he was like, "I got you. This sh-- crazy, I got you." "

The then-rookie rapper got more than he bargained for, because after Jay offered his verse, Beanie Sigel came in to complete the trifecta. "Beans came in and heard that, and Beans was like, "Oh no, I'm next. I'm getting on that joint," " Free said.

Would "What We Do" be the same without Jay and Beans? Let us know in the comments below!
